Why some sites show cookies message (like this site uses cookies, do you accept?) – is it required, if yes then which body recommends it?

Many websites use cookie messages to store information which is required by them for fulfilling various purposes which includes storing user’s login information, saving passwords, account numbers and other relevant information. However, many internet surfers feel that use of cookie is violation of their private information as it may be accessed or hacked by a third party and can be used in the wrong way.

To take care of such concerns, it is recommended for each website to follow The Cookie Law. It is a piece of privacy legislation that requires websites to get consent from its users or visitors to store or retrieve any information on a computer or any other personal gadgets. This law is designed to protect online privacy by making consumers aware of how information about them is collected and used online and gives them choice to allow it or not. This is the reason that several websites show the cookies message to users for asking their consent.

One category of sites that use cookies are those that need to keep track of user’s internet browsing habits which helps them to know about user’s interest areas so as to serve relevant content to them. For example , when a user searches about latest mobile phones released by a particular company, the website will track down this user’s interest and will display relevant advertisements on various web pages opened by that user. So, in order to let the user know that their browsing history may be tracked down by them, these websites are recommended to show cookie messages to the visitors.
